Leadership and Participation

Women and girls with disabilities have the right to take part in all areas of life, including in politics, work,
education and in the community. However, in Uganda, women with disabilities are often excluded from
meaningful participation and leadership opportunities. WODNET’S projects, programmes and actions
aim at addressing exclusion and advocate for strategies to increase the meaningful participation of
women and girls with disabilities in Australian society.

Employment and Education

Everyone has the right to access education at all levels and to be employed. WODNET believes that
accessing employment is fundamental to the enjoyment of other rights such as access to adequate
food, clothing, housing; as well as the ability to meaningfully take part in a democratic society.
WODNET’S projects, programmes and actions aim at supporting the removal of barriers preventing
women and girls with disabilities from fully participating in education and employment.

Human Rights

‘Human rights’ refers to the basic rights and freedoms to which all humans are entitled,
including right to quality of life, freedom of thought and expression, and equality in law. While
all of WODNET’s work is grounded in human rights, WODNET’s projects, programmes and actions relate
directly to United Nations Conventions and Declarations. This includes the Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination
Against Women (CEDAW).

Sexuality and Health

Women and girls with disabilities have the right to access adequate sexual and reproductive
healthcare and to make decisions about their own body and relationships. WODNET projects,
Programmes and actions aim at addressing the violations of women and girl’s healthcare,
sexual and reproductive rights and support the rights of all women and girls with disabilities to
control and make free and informed decisions about their body, sexuality, health and
relationships.

Government Laws and Policy

As the peak advocacy body for women and girls with disabilities in Uganda, WODNET
regularly provides advice to the government on policy, program and service delivery issues
related to women and girls with disability. WODNET also supports its Board, staff and members
to take part in representative roles in government consultations and committees.

Violence and Safety

Women and girls with disabilities have the right to be free from all forms of violence in all
settings, including at home, in schools, healthcare settings, workplaces and the community.
However, women and girls with disabilities in Uganda continue to experience high rates of all
forms of violence. WODNET’s projects, programmes and actions aim at supporting the right to
be safe from all forms of violence, abuse, exploitation and neglect.
